Drawing On

*new* Gallery
April 2 to 13, 2008
Opening Reception Sunday April 6 from 2-4

Drawing On features the drawings of Yael Brotman, Amanda Burk, Judith Geher, and Lois Schklar. This exhibition brings the work of these four artists into dialogue about contemporary human experience. Yael Brotman’s new drawing installation explores the state of having the ability to take action but feeling helpless, hoping that action will be taken on our behalf, while Amanda Burk’s figurative graphite drawings investigate the subtlety of communication through gesture. Judith Geher’s drawings capture the quietness of the human figure and speak to a malleable human nature. Lois Schklar’s work shifts from wall to paper, tracing surface and shadows both real and illusory while playing with the physical and psychological space the work occupies and our perceptions of it. Drawing On was organized by Lois Schklar.

Paul Butler's Collage Party at the JMB Gallery, Hart House
Starting Thursday, March 6, watch a select team of local artists (specializing in a spectrum of media work) transform the gallery space into a shared studio/lounge, eating, playing, and working together with the goal of learning through discourse, and experiencing how each other works. A variety of activities, including ping-pong, videos, meals, field-trips, will be centered in one main studio space shared by invited artists. The gallery/studio will serve as a sanctuary from the profession of art, a space where artists will be free to experiment – like an art school, but without the teachers or assignments.
